Because stone is a natural for the garden. Earthy and elegant, these are nature’s own naturally formed columns. Millions of years ago as this basaltic magma cooled, it formed unusual five- and six-sided columns that are now exposed in geologic formations in northeastern Washington state. We hand-select them for size, color, and interest, and fit them with our hand-hammered copper lights and detailing. Effective, functional light glows from beneath the copper sconce, illuminating the column’s unique characteristics, and lighting your pathway, stairs, entry, or garden. These column lights look great in almost any landscape from New England through the Southwest and, of course, in their native Pacific Northwest.
Washington State Natural Columnar Basalt: This amazing rock requires no carving, hewing, or splitting. Nature has done all the work! Colors shade from ochre and umbers to rich browns with black accents, highlighting the irregular yet specific form of these basalt columns. They naturalize in the landscape like timeless sentinels. The addition of the copper sconce and details enhances this effect. The copper detailing forms a stem-like pattern that contains and conceals the wire leading up to our hand-hammered copper sconce. Our Washington artisans inset the copper in the column by hand. This takes an eye for sculpture and design, creating a unique piece with a personal touch.
